Schalke 04 will be without striker Moussa Sylla when they host Mainz 05 in the Bundesliga on Saturday, 17 October.Kick-off at the VELTINS-Arena is at 3:30 PM local time (15:30 CEST).Schalke enter Matchday 6 in 13th place with five points from five games, while Mainz sit eighth with seven points. Both sides lost last weekend and have clear problems to solve. Schalke are still waiting for their first home goal of the season, while Mainz need to tighten a defence that has conceded 10 goals in five league matches.

Schalke team news and injuries

Sylla is ruled out after injuring his left leg from an opponent’s kick during Schalke’s 2-1 defeat at SC Freiburg on 11 October. In Schalke’s pre-match squad update, the club confirmed that the forward is unavailable for the time being without disclosing an exact diagnosis or recovery timeline.

Head coach Miron Muslic has not yet confirmed who will replace Sylla up front. Veteran striker Edin Džeko is in line to lead the attack, supported by captain Kenan Karaman and Adil Aouchiche. Forward Emil Højlund and reserve goalkeeper Johannes Siebeking also remain sidelined.

Schalke have defended well at home, keeping two consecutive clean sheets in 0-0 draws against Bayern Munich and SV Elversberg. Scoring remains their biggest issue, with only four goals across their first five league games. Speaking in Schalke’s official match preview, Muslic said his team can back themselves more in attack while making sure they do not leave themselves too exposed at the back.

Mainz will travel to Gelsenkirchen without goalkeeper Robin Zentner, midfielder Otto Ruoppi and forward Silas. Head coach Urs Fischer confirmed in Mainz’s pre-match press conference that all three remain out, while the rest of his squad is fit for selection.

Silas has completed parts of team training, but Saturday’s match comes too soon for him. Alexander Schwolow is set to continue in goal while Zentner recovers.

Attacking output has not been a problem for Mainz, who have scored 13 league goals this season, including a 5-0 away win at Hamburger SV and a 4-3 victory at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Defensive mistakes have been much costlier, most recently in last weekend’s 4-3 home loss to Bayer Leverkusen.

Fischer pointed to individual errors and spells of inconsistent defending across recent games.“One thing is clear: we have to do better at Schalke,” he said.He called for better organisation, compactness and closer distances between players to protect their goal.

Schalke vs Mainz predicted lineups

These starting elevens are predictions based on recent team selections and official injury updates, not confirmed team sheets. The clubs will announce their official lineups about an hour before kick-off.

Schalke 04 predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Loris Karius, Timo Becker, Nikola Katić, Hasan Kuruçay, Adrian Gantenbein, Satoshi Tanaka, Soufian El-Faouzi, Robin Gosens, Kenan Karaman, Adil Aouchiche, Edin Džeko.

Mainz 05 predicted XI (3-5-2): Alexander Schwolow, Stefan Posch, Fabio Gruber, Kacper Potulski, Anthony Caci, Nadiem Amiri, Kaishu Sano, Lee Jae-sung, Phillipp Mwene, Sheraldo Becker, Phillip Tietz.

Eric Martel is also in contention to start in the Mainz midfield after beginning last weekend’s match against Leverkusen ahead of Lee.

What to watch at the VELTINS-Arena

Both coaches expect a physical game built around second balls and quick transitions. Schalke’s back three and central midfield pair of Satoshi Tanaka and Soufian El-Faouzi have given them a solid defensive base, but losing Sylla removes a mobile threat in the box. If Džeko starts, Schalke will need Karaman, Aouchiche and wing-backs Robin Gosens and Adrian Gantenbein to get close to him quickly so he is not isolated.

For Mainz, the match tests whether their strong away form can break down a compact home defence. They have won four straight Bundesliga away fixtures and carry plenty of threat through Phillip Tietz and Sheraldo Becker. Still, if Mainz leave gaps in midfield when pushing wing-backs Anthony Caci and Phillipp Mwene forward, Schalke could find the space they need to score their first home goal of the campaign.
