MATRADE Loftus Road

Queens Park Rangers welcome Swansea City to MATRADE Loftus Road on Saturday, 24 October, with both teams looking to respond to defeats in their previous Championship matches. QPR were beaten 3-0 away at Birmingham City, while Swansea’s four-game league winning streak ended with a 0-1 home loss to West Ham United.

Kick-off is set for 3pm BST, which is 7:30pm in India. Swansea top the Championship table with 23 points from 11 matches, though Middlesbrough could overtake them when they face Bolton on Friday night. QPR sit ninth on 17 points.

Swansea travel with confidence after winning seven of their opening 11 league games, scoring 16 goals and conceding just eight. QPR have lost only twice in the league, scoring 15 and conceding 12, but five draws have slowed their climb up the table.

Rangers showed their attacking ceiling in a 4-1 win over Derby County on 14 October, though the loss at Birmingham proved how quickly they can be punished for giving the ball away in dangerous areas. Swansea’s defeat to West Ham was frustrating for different reasons, as they created chances without registering a shot on target after Divine Mukasa’s first-half goal.

Looking at the Championship match centre and form guide, Swansea have been the more consistent side, but QPR have the attacking quality to test them at home. The main questions before kick-off are how QPR cope with a depleted squad and how Swansea replace Ronald.

QPR head coach Julien Stéphan has several major absentees to manage, with Tariq Lamptey, Nicolas Madsen and Rumarn Burrell ruled out until late November and unavailable for this match. Ilias Chair also remains sidelined with a muscle problem after missing several weeks, while Amadou Mbengue will miss the rest of the season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The defensive injuries leave QPR thin on the right flank. Mbengue was stretchered off against Derby and requires season-ending surgery, while Lamptey is still struggling with an ankle issue. Losing two options on that side leaves Kealey Adamson as the primary right-back and reduces Stéphan’s flexibility to adjust his back line during the match.

Madsen is another big loss in the middle of the pitch. Scans showed he needs three to four weeks of rest after feeling discomfort following the Derby win. Having chipped in with goals recently, his absence affects both QPR’s midfield balance and their threat around the box. Up front, Burrell remains out after picking up an injury on international duty.

There is better news in attack, where Richard Kone has been cleared to play after an injury scare at Birmingham. Despite a stop-start campaign, Kone is expected to train and gives Stéphan a natural centre-forward. Left-back Dennis Cirkin is also back from suspension, competing with Boy Kemper after Kemper’s strong recent run in the side.

Meanwhile, Karamoko Dembele could make the matchday squad after playing 45 minutes for the development team, though Stéphan indicated his minutes would be limited off the bench.

Stéphan used a back five at Birmingham, but he could switch to a four-man defence on Saturday depending on the fitness of his remaining defenders and whether he wants an extra midfielder to help play through Swansea’s press.

Swansea City team news and injuries

Swansea have fewer injury concerns than QPR, though losing Ronald for six to eight weeks with a hamstring injury is a significant blow for head coach Vítor Matos. The Brazilian picked up the issue following the 0-1 defeat to West Ham, where he started at right-back as Matos continued adapting him to the role. Having also scored twice off the bench this season, including a late winner at Millwall, his absence costs Swansea both an attacking threat and a full-back option.

Filip Lissah returns from a one-match suspension and is the leading candidate to step in at right-back. Josh Key is back in parts of training as he recovers from a muscular issue, but this trip comes too soon for him. Cameron Burgess remains a long-term absentee with a cruciate ligament injury, limiting cover in central defence behind regular starters Ben Cabango and Stephen Welsh, while Josh Tymon should continue at left-back.

In attack, Joseph Opoku and Moussa Yeo started against West Ham, with Eom Ji-Sung coming on in the second half. Matos has also praised Jeremy Monga’s progress in training, and while Ronald’s absence opens a spot for another attacker, Monga is not a guaranteed starter.

Stephen Eustaquio returned off the bench against West Ham to bolster the midfield, though Jay Fulton, Gonçalo Franco and Marko Stamenić started that game and remain favourites to keep their places. Striker Ross Stewart is also an option after training well this week, having missed the West Ham match due to EFL homegrown-player rules rather than injury. With Lissah slotting in at right-back, Matos can keep a settled spine while deciding how best to balance his front line, particularly if the game opens up and requires pace off the bench.

QPR vs Swansea: Predicted lineups

The predicted lineups below are based on the latest team news and each side’s previous league match. They are not confirmed starting XIs, and both coaches could still make changes after their final training sessions.

QPR Predicted XI, 4-2-3-1

Charles, Adamson, Edwards, Dunne, Kemper, Varane, Kamara, Poku, Vale, Smyth, Kone

Stéphan could opt for a back four protected by two central midfielders, with Poku, Vale and Smyth supporting Kone. That shape keeps enough bodies behind the ball to deal with Swansea’s possession while offering quick outlets on the break. A return to the back five used at Birmingham remains possible, and the choices at left-back and in midfield are not fully settled.

If he trains as expected, Kone will lead the line, flanked by the direct running of Poku and Smyth, while Vale links the midfield and attack. Without Madsen, Varane and Kamara will carry greater responsibility for winning the ball and moving it forward cleanly.

Swansea City Predicted XI, 4-3-3

Vigouroux, Lissah, Cabango, Welsh, Tymon, Franco, Fulton, Stamenić, Yeo, Idah, Opoku.

This setup retains Swansea’s 4-3-3 shape, with Lissah replacing Ronald at right-back alongside the same centre-backs, midfield trio and front three that started against West Ham. Eom, Eustaquio and Vipotnik offer strong bench options if Matos needs to change his attacking approach.

Franco, Fulton and Stamenić will be key to controlling possession and limiting QPR’s space on the counter-attack. Up front, Idah will look to occupy the central defenders while Yeo and Opoku provide width and movement.

Bottom line

This fixture has the makings of a tight Championship contest. QPR have been tough to beat this season, and the returns of Kone and Cirkin offer a timely boost, but a heavy injury list and the costly turnovers seen at Birmingham remain real concerns for Stéphan.

Swansea boast the stronger defensive record and greater consistency, even if losing Ronald removes a dangerous outlet and forces a change at right-back. Their defeat to West Ham also showed they can be frustrated when opponents stay compact and limit clear shooting opportunities.

QPR should make this competitive at Loftus Road if they look after possession, likely defending in numbers and breaking quickly. However, Swansea’s organisation and consistency give them a narrow edge if they stay patient.

Prediction: QPR 1-2 Swansea City.

Swansea look the more reliable side on current form, though QPR carry enough threat to test the league leaders. The confirmed team sheets, particularly at left-back for QPR and right-back for Swansea, will give the clearest indication of how both managers plan to approach the game.
