Mohun Bagan Super Giant came from behind to claim a 1-2 away win over Sporting Club Delhi at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on Friday, 16 October 2026. After trailing at the interval, the visitors struck twice within four minutes through Lee Erwin and Miguel Figueira to secure their first win of the 2026-27 Indian Super League season.

Lalrinliana Hnamte had put Sporting Delhi ahead in the 23rd minute, sending the home side into half-time with the lead after an encouraging opening period. Mohun Bagan responded after the restart by increasing their attacking threat in the final third and turning an open contest in their favour.

The comeback did not come from a major swing in possession. Instead, Bagan made far better use of their trips into the penalty area, with Erwin equalising in the 56th minute and Figueira scoring the winner in the 60th minute.

Hnamte gives Sporting Delhi a first-half lead

Sporting Delhi started confidently and tested Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Vishal Kaith inside the opening minutes. Juan Pena forced Kaith into action from distance in the fourth minute, and Lamgoulen Hangshing sent a shot over the crossbar following a corner in the eighth minute.

Mohun Bagan gradually settled and began creating chances of their own. Erwin fired wide from outside the box before Rahul Bheke connected with a cross from Lallianzuala Chhangte, forcing Sporting Delhi goalkeeper Nora Fernandes into a vital save to keep the game scoreless.

The hosts found the opening goal in the 23rd minute. Manoj Mohammad picked out Hnamte in space, and he finished with his left foot into the bottom-left corner to put Sporting Delhi 1-0 ahead.

It was a well-worked move that rewarded Delhi’s bright start, though the hosts soon needed their goalkeeper to stay in front. Bagan pushed for an equaliser before half-time, with Fernandes stopping attempts from both Figueira and Erwin. Erwin then dragged another effort narrowly wide in first-half stoppage time, allowing Delhi to reach the break with their lead intact thanks to their clinical opener and Fernandes’ saves.

Four-minute burst turns the match for Mohun Bagan

Mohun Bagan came out for the second half with greater urgency and immediately put the Sporting Delhi backline under heavier pressure.

The equaliser arrived in the 56th minute. Bheke found Erwin inside the penalty area, and the forward calmly guided a right-footed shot into the bottom-left corner.

Having spent much of the first half protecting their lead, Sporting Delhi now had to reset with the score level. Bagan gave the hosts almost no time to recover.

Four minutes later, in the 60th minute, Apuia, also known as Lalengmawia Ralte, set up Figueira, who steered a left-footed finish into the bottom-left corner to make it 1-2. After playing an active role in Bagan’s first-half attacks, Figueira delivered the winning goal before Delhi could regain their footing.

Numbers highlight Bagan’s penalty-area threat

The full-time figures from FotMob’s match data show how Mohun Bagan became the more dangerous team despite an almost even share of the ball. Possession finished at 51 per cent for Mohun Bagan and 49 per cent for Sporting Delhi, showing that the visitors did not need to dominate possession to control the attacking threat.

Bagan’s edge came from what they did in advanced areas. They recorded 20 total shots compared with 15 for Sporting Delhi and registered 32 touches inside the opposition penalty area, double Delhi’s tally of 16.

The expected-goals figures told a similar story. Mohun Bagan finished with 1.76 expected goals, compared with 1.12 for Sporting Delhi. While expected goals estimate the quality of scoring opportunities rather than guarantee goals, the numbers reflect how consistently Bagan worked the ball into dangerous shooting positions.

Late chances at both ends before the final whistle

Sporting Delhi kept searching for an equaliser after falling behind. Rodriguinho tried his luck from outside the box in the 72nd minute, sending his effort over the crossbar.

With their lead established, Mohun Bagan used their bench to manage the closing stages. Samir Zeljkovic and Manvir Singh came on in the 73rd minute, Liston Colaco and Sahal Abdul Samad followed six minutes later in the 79th minute, and Subashish Bose entered in the 87th minute.

The visitors continued to create chances after making those changes. Fernandes saved an effort from Zeljkovic inside the box, Alberto Rodriguez headed over the bar following a corner, and Manvir forced another late save from the Delhi goalkeeper.

Sporting Delhi still had one final opportunity to rescue a point deep in added time. In the sixth minute of stoppage time, Hnamte had a chance to score his second of the night, but he sent his effort over the crossbar as Bagan held on for all three points.

A needed win for Bagan and a second defeat for Delhi

The victory gives Mohun Bagan an immediate response after losing 1-0 to NorthEast United in their opening match of the season. After creating chances without reward in the first half in New Delhi, their sharper finishing after the break got their campaign moving, with the wider team context available on the club’s official squad page.

For Sporting Delhi, the result leaves them with two consecutive defeats following their 3-2 loss to Bengaluru FC in their opening fixture. Claiming that the hosts suffered a complete collapse would overlook their strong first-half work, where they created chances, took the lead through Hnamte and stayed ahead with help from Fernandes.

Mohun Bagan did not require a confirmed formation change or a major tactical overhaul to complete the comeback. Their improved attacking threat after half-time, higher shot volume and two clinical finishes in four minutes proved enough to turn the match around, and the impact on the table can be tracked through the official ISL standings.
