Sutton United have turned down an approach from an unnamed League One club for manager Chris Agutter. The National League side confirmed the decision in a statement on Wednesday, 14 October, as Agutter made it clear he wants to stay at Gander Green Lane.
Sutton did not name the third-tier club that made the approach, and it remains unclear whether the interest went as far as a formal job offer. Instead, the club pointed to its close working relationship with the head coach and a shared plan for the future.
Agutter said he is happy with the direction the club is heading after holding talks with the board.
Agutter said (via SUFC),
I believe in what we’re building here at Sutton United. I’ve had honest conversations with the Board about our ambitions, and we’re completely aligned on where we want to take this Club. There’s a lot of work ahead, but I remain excited about what we can achieve together.
In its statement, Sutton promised to keep backing Agutter as they work toward their long-term goals. Those plans were previously shared with supporters during a Meet the Manager event in August focused on building a sustainable future.
Agutter’s First Year in Charge
Agutter arrived at Sutton in October 2025 after the club paid compensation to bring him in from Worthing, replacing former boss Steve Morison. He earned the move after leading Worthing to 88 points in the 2024/25 National League South campaign, where they missed out on the title to Truro City by a single point.
Before his time at Worthing, Agutter won the Isthmian Premier Division title as manager of Hastings United in 2021. He has also held coaching jobs at Brighton and Hove Albion, Stevenage, and Eastbourne Borough.
When Agutter took over at Sutton last season, the team sat in the National League relegation zone. He guided them out of the bottom four and secured survival with two matches to spare.
Focus Turns to the FA Cup
Sutton started the 2026/27 season with three straight victories, though results have been mixed in recent weeks. A 2-0 home defeat to Boreham Wood on 9 October left the team 13th in the National League table with 18 points from 13 games.
Agutter will be back in the home dugout on Saturday, 17 October, when Sutton host Truro City in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round. His side will return to league action a week later with an away match against Harrogate Town on 24 October.
