Fir Park

Motherwell host Hearts at Fir Park on Sunday, 25 October, looking to end a five-match losing run in the Scottish Premiership. Hearts also arrive off the back of two straight defeats, though their stronger league form and higher goal return give them good reason to believe they can take all three points from North Lanarkshire.

Kick-off is set for 2:00 pm UK local time (GMT), which is 7:30 pm IST. In the supporter information published on 24 October, Hearts noted that Storm Boelo could bring strong winds and asked travelling fans to check club channels for any changes. At the time of writing, the match remains on as planned.

Motherwell need to stop the slide

Motherwell Battle Celtic for Possession at Fir Park

Motherwell sit 10th in the table with eight points from nine games. Alfred Johansson’s side have lost their last five Premiership matches, scoring only three goals and letting in 12 over that stretch. Their latest game ended in a 3-2 away loss to Kilmarnock on 17 October, a week after falling 0-2 at home to Celtic.

That run has dampened the mood around Fir Park following an encouraging start to Johansson’s first season at the club. The manager has spoken about leaning on his time at Rosenborg to help the team through this rough patch. In his pre-match comments published by Motherwell, he also pointed out that the whole squad has to step up together.

First and foremost, Motherwell need to make themselves harder to beat. Finding the net has not been the main problem lately, as Alex Lowry and Seb Palmer-Houlden both scored at Kilmarnock, but avoidable mistakes at the back have cost them points. Against a Hearts side with 20 league goals already this season, Motherwell cannot afford to hand out simple chances.

Hearts are third on 16 points from nine matches, sitting eight points clear of Motherwell. They are in a much better spot in the table, even if they head to Fir Park trying to shake off back-to-back losses in all competitions.

Wouter Vrancken’s team lost 7-1 to Celtic in the league on 18 October and followed that with a 2-0 away defeat against Trabzonspor in the UEFA Conference League on 22 October.

Only Celtic have scored more than Hearts’ 20 goals after nine Premiership games, though the Edinburgh side have been less convincing away from home. They have taken just four points from five away league fixtures so far. That record gives Motherwell something to target if the hosts stay organised at the back and make their home pitch count.

For Hearts, the priority is turning their attacking threat into a calmer, more controlled 90 minutes. Having conceded eight goals across their last two games, staying switched on defensively matters just as much as creating chances at the other end.

Team news and injuries

Callum Hendry, Dylan Williams and Oscar Priestman are unavailable for Motherwell because of injury.

There has been some better news from the treatment room this week. Motherwell confirmed that Johnny Koutroumbis made his comeback against Kilmarnock after being out since August. The club also said Priestman, Hendry and Regan Charles-Cook were getting closer to full fitness. Still, that update stopped short of saying any of those three are ready to start against Hearts, and there was no further word on Charles-Cook’s status before this preview was written.

Motherwell should have more depth soon, but it would be a stretch to assume the players nearing fitness will go straight into Sunday’s starting lineup.

Recent injury reports list Ageu, Blair Spittal, Craig Halkett, Tom Renaud, Christian Borchgrevink and Harry Milne as out for Hearts.

Oisin McEntee is the main doubt to watch. Hearts confirmed that he missed the 2-0 defeat to Trabzonspor through injury, and the club has not publicly confirmed whether he will recover in time to start at Fir Park. That leaves a question mark over his place in the predicted XI, with Tomas Magnússon in line to step in if McEntee does not make it.

Hearts also saw Borchgrevink go off injured during the Trabzonspor match, while Milne was already missing before kick-off. Those setbacks leave Vrancken lighter at the back than he would like for a trip where Motherwell will be desperate to get a result.

Predicted lineups

These are projected starting lineups rather than official team sheets. Both clubs will confirm their starting XIs closer to kick-off.

Motherwell predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Paulsen, Sparrow, O’Donnell, Moormann, Longelo, Fadinger, Hodge, Maswanhise, Lowry, Said, Palmer-Houlden.

Hearts predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Reus, Altena, Fagan-Walcott, McCart, Kingsley, McEntee, Mendy, Miller, Braga, McPake, Wilson.

McEntee is the biggest doubt in the Hearts lineup after sitting out the European game on Thursday. If he misses out again, Magnússon could come into midfield, which would slightly shift the balance in the middle of the pitch. For Motherwell, Lowry and Palmer-Houlden are expected to keep their spots up front after scoring at Kilmarnock.

Key battles to watch

Dealing with the Hearts forward line will be the toughest part of the afternoon for Motherwell. Braga, McPake, Miller and Wilson give the visitors plenty of ways to get into the box, while the hosts have let in 12 goals across their five-game losing streak. Motherwell have to screen the space in front of their centre-backs and avoid getting pulled out of shape.

Lowry and Palmer-Houlden both found the net against Kilmarnock and should start again here. Motherwell need them to carry a threat going forward, though their work without the ball will be just as important. If the home side turn the ball over cheaply, Hearts have the pace and movement to hurt them on the break.

Hearts’ away form

Hearts sit higher in the table, yet four points from five away matches shows they have struggled for consistency on the road. Motherwell can make life awkward for the visitors if they start on the front foot, win second balls and pin Hearts back for long spells. Hearts will want to settle on the ball early so the home crowd does not get a chance to lift a struggling Motherwell side.

Prediction: Motherwell 0-1 Hearts

Playing at Fir Park should help Motherwell keep this competitive, especially if Lowry and Palmer-Houlden carry over their form from the Kilmarnock game. Still, five league defeats in a row and a poor defensive record are hard to look past.

Hearts have problems of their own to sort out, and their away form has been patchy. Even so, they score much more freely in the league and have enough quality in the final third to punish any defensive lapses from the hosts. A narrow away win looks the likeliest result.
