Huddersfield Town captain Ryan Ledson has received a three-match suspension and a £7,000 fine after admitting a Football Association misconduct charge from the club’s League One fixture against Sheffield Wednesday on 10 October 2026.
According to Huddersfield’s official announcement, it was alleged that the midfielder used abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official around the tunnel area at half-time and again after the final whistle during the 2-2 draw at the Accu Stadium. After Ledson admitted the charge, an Independent Regulatory Commission imposed the three-match ban and fine with immediate effect.
The punishment delays Ledson’s return to competitive action just as he was nearing a comeback from an elbow injury. Although he had returned to training, he was not in the matchday squad against Sheffield Wednesday and has not played since a 0-0 draw away at Mansfield Town on 12 September, as the Yorkshire Post reported. He served the first game of his ban on 24 October against Wigan Athletic and remains suspended for two further League One matches.
Frustrating finish to the Sheffield Wednesday draw
The misconduct charge followed a tense afternoon at the Accu Stadium in which Huddersfield let a two-goal lead slip late on. Goals from Joe Taylor and Derensili Sanches Fernandes had put the Terriers 2-0 ahead and in position to take all three points.
Sheffield Wednesday mounted a late fightback when an Ibane Bowat own goal cut the deficit, before Jamal Lowe converted a stoppage-time penalty to secure a 2-2 draw. Referee Edward Duckworth had initially signalled for a corner, only to change his decision and award a spot-kick following an incident involving Liam Cooper.
That late equaliser made for a frustrating finish for the home side, though Huddersfield’s disciplinary statement does not state that the penalty decision prompted Ledson’s actions. The FA charge covered alleged language directed at a match official around the tunnel area both at half-time and after the final whistle. Neither the club nor the FA has published the exact words used.
Drury backs his captain but stresses club standards
Head coach Martin Drury defended Ledson’s character while acknowledging that the midfielder had overstepped the mark. Speaking ahead of the Wigan Athletic fixture, Drury said Ledson had been a very good captain on and off the pitch and noted that he understood the player’s passion for the team’s success.
At the same time, Drury pointed out that the club sets clear standards of behaviour and admitted that Ledson probably should not have become involved in the situation to the extent that he did. His remarks were published in the We Are Terriers press conference transcript. Drury added that the club had to accept the punishment and focus on the games ahead, and he suggested that the longer wait to return could give both Ledson and the squad an extra lift once the ban is over.

What the suspension means for Huddersfield’s midfield
Ledson’s suspension began on 24 October when Huddersfield beat Wigan Athletic 2-1 at home. The club’s matchday team news confirmed that the skipper was serving the first match of his three-game ban, with Cam Humphreys taking the captain’s armband and starting in central midfield alongside Archie Collins.
Two fixtures remain on the suspension. Ledson will miss the away trip to Bradford City on 31 October and the home game against Luton Town on 3 November. His absence for the visit to Bradford is an added setback for Huddersfield, as the West Yorkshire derby is a fixture where Drury will want his full range of midfield options available.
With Humphreys and Collins having already started together in the win over Wigan, the ban does not force Drury to change his starting midfield pairing. Even so, it limits his options for rotation and removes an experienced leader and club captain from the matchday squad for two more games. Having shown they can win without Ledson against Wigan, the Terriers now face the task of keeping that momentum going against Bradford and Luton before he is eligible to return.
