How Nottingham Forest won the race for Michael Noonan

Shamrock Rovers confirmed on 30 September 2026 that 18-year-old striker Michael Noonan has signed a pre-contract agreement with Premier League club Nottingham Forest. He will remain in Dublin until the end of the 2026 League of Ireland season to help Rovers in their title push before officially joining Forest on 1 January 2027.

Because Noonan’s contract expires at the end of the year, Forest will not pay a conventional transfer fee, though the clubs that developed him are due training compensation. The 42 reported that Rovers can expect basic compensation of around €170,000, while other reports place the likely sum slightly higher. The exact payment has not been publicly confirmed, leaving the Irish club with a low six-figure return.

That figure is well below earlier valuations. According to The 42, Rovers board minutes from February 2025 noted an expectation that Noonan could be sold that summer for around €1.5 million, and by January 2026 his reported value reached €2 million or more. In a separate negotiation in February 2026, Rovers reportedly accepted an offer of about €1.8 million from German club Hoffenheim, but Noonan chose not to pursue the move.

While Rovers had agreed improved terms with the forward during his time at the club, that deal did not add extra years to his contract, which weakened the club’s negotiating position as the expiry date neared.

The financial outcome contrasts with other recent deals involving League of Ireland teenagers. Shamrock Rovers agreed a future transfer with Arsenal for Victor Ozhianvuna for a reported €2 million before add-ons, while former St Patrick’s Athletic striker Mason Melia joined Tottenham in a deal reported at an initial €1.9 million with potential bonuses. The difference highlights how contract length and timing determine whether Irish clubs can turn youth development into major transfer fees.

How Forest won the race ahead of Ajax

Forest beat several European clubs to secure Noonan’s signature. Alongside Hoffenheim’s accepted bid, Celtic held an interest without reportedly making a formal offer. In June 2026, The 42 reported that Ajax were in advanced talks with Noonan and had become his preferred destination after he visited their Amsterdam training complex. Ajax’s plan was for him to start with their reserve side, Jong Ajax.

According to The 42, Forest won the teenager over with a detailed pitch to Noonan and his family led by former Republic of Ireland midfielder Andy Reid, who heads Forest’s football development work. Alongside clips of what Noonan did well, Forest showed video of areas needing improvement and used footage of first-team striker Chris Wood using his body in different match situations. Forest also presented tailored strength and conditioning and nutrition plans.

As part of Forest’s transition programme, Noonan will train with the senior first-team squad every day while playing his matches for the club’s Under-21 side. The setup is designed to expose him to senior standards without rushing him into Premier League action.

Michael Noonan’s senior and international record

Noonan joined Shamrock Rovers from St Patrick’s Athletic in January 2025 at age 16 after Rovers coach Stephen Bradley tracked his progress and trusted him with senior football. Weeks later, on 13 February 2025, Noonan scored the only goal in a 1-0 away win over Molde in the UEFA Conference League knockout phase play-offs. At 16 years and 197 days old, he became the youngest scorer in Conference League history, a record confirmed by UEFA’s match report.

He broke another record in September 2025 by scoring the winning goal against Andorra in an Under-21 European Championship qualifier. At 17 years, one month and nine days old, he became the youngest scorer for the Republic of Ireland Under-21 team, according to the Football Association of Ireland’s match report. He followed that in November 2025 by scoring three goals at the Under-17 World Cup in Qatar as Ireland reached the last 16.

In senior club football, The 42 reported that Noonan scored eight goals for Rovers across all competitions in 2026 and played in five European qualifiers. In the League of Ireland Premier Division specifically, he made 30 league appearances with 14 starts in 2025, followed by 28 league appearances and 17 starts in 2026 based on statistics available on 23 October.

The path toward the first team

Forest chief football officer George Syrianos said the club had followed Noonan for some time alongside other interested clubs. He described recruiting high-potential players as a core part of the academy’s long-term vision to provide a genuine route to the first team through individual development plans.

Speaking to RTE, former Republic of Ireland winger Keith Treacy called the move a potentially positive one, though he warned Noonan will face a tough path into Forest’s senior team due to competition for places and potential changes in management.

Once Noonan links up with Forest in January, his progress toward senior football will rest on improving his link-up play and decision-making, remaining effective when defenders deny him space behind the back line, adapting to the physical demands of English football, and turning his goal instinct into consistent output against stronger opposition.
