West Ham United defender Regan Clayton has joined Scunthorpe United on a one-month loan, giving the young full-back a fresh opportunity to play regular senior football.

West Ham confirmed the move on 9 October in an official club announcement. The switch takes the 21-year-old into the National League for his third loan spell in the fifth tier, following previous stints with Dagenham & Redbridge and Braintree Town. The Hammers stated that the move will allow Clayton to continue his development by earning senior minutes.

Clayton joins a Scunthorpe side looking to recover from a difficult start to the league season. According to a subsequent West Ham Academy loan update, a 3-2 home defeat against Woking on 24 October left the Iron 22nd in the National League after suffering their ninth league loss of the campaign.

Rising through the West Ham academy

Clayton joined the West Ham Academy at the age of ten and worked his way up through the Under-18 and Under-21 squads. He has made 150 appearances across those two levels, according to the club’s announcement of his loan move.

During the 2022/23 season, he helped the Under-18s win both the FA Youth Cup and the U18 Premier League South title. He was also named on the senior first-team bench for two UEFA Europa Conference League games against FCSB during that campaign, though he did not make an appearance in either match.

Ahead of his move to Scunthorpe, the defender played seven times for West Ham’s Under-21s during the 2026/27 campaign, wearing the captain’s armband in two of those fixtures. West Ham’s official player profile describes him as a full-back who likes to push forward and support attacks. Clayton turns 22 on 11 November 2026, and while he has extensive youth football experience, this latest loan is intended to test him further against senior opponents.

Building on previous National League spells

Clayton has already gained fifth-tier experience through two earlier loans. After sustaining a knee injury during a Premier League International Cup semi-final for West Ham Under-21s against PSV, he returned to competitive football in January 2025, according to his club player profile.

He went on to join Dagenham & Redbridge on loan for the second half of the 2024/25 season, making 11 appearances. West Ham reported that he then played eight times for Braintree Town towards the start of the following season. Those two spells gave Clayton 19 senior appearances prior to arriving at Scunthorpe, where he now has another chance to compete for a regular role at this level.

Early minutes at the Attis Arena

Clayton has already featured in Scunthorpe’s first-team squad. In an Academy loan update published on 26 October, West Ham noted that he played the final seven minutes of Scunthorpe’s 3-2 defeat to Woking at the Attis Arena on 24 October. That outing marked his second appearance for Scunthorpe, with the upcoming trip to Tamworth offering a chance to make his third.

Woking built a three-goal lead in that match after Aiden O’Brien opened the scoring in the seventh minute and John Marquis added a 25th-minute penalty. O’Brien then scored his second goal of the afternoon shortly after half-time.

Scunthorpe fought back through James Norwood in the 63rd minute and Luke Brennan in the 84th minute, but the hosts could not find a late equaliser. Clayton came off the bench during the closing stages. While his brief cameo shows that he is involved with the senior group, it is too early to say whether he has claimed a regular starting berth, and upcoming matches will give a clearer indication of how Scunthorpe plan to use him.

Development context and what comes next

West Ham views the spell as an opportunity for Clayton to develop in senior football, though the club has not publicly set out any specific performance targets, minimum appearance requirements, or guaranteed starting role at Scunthorpe. His background and club profile point to a role at full-back, but neither club has publicly confirmed whether he will play mainly on the left side of defence or in another defensive position.

Prior to the loan, The West Ham Way reported that Clayton’s contract with the Hammers runs until the end of the 2026/27 season. West Ham did not include that detail in its official loan announcement, and neither club has announced a permanent transfer or a decision on his longer-term future.

Scunthorpe were scheduled to travel to Tamworth on Tuesday, 27 October for a 7.45pm UK time kick-off. The match offers Clayton another chance to add to his tally during the initial one-month spell. Neither club has publicly confirmed a loan extension or outlined the terms that will apply once the one-month period ends.

For Scunthorpe, the immediate focus is whether Clayton can turn early substitute appearances into regular starts, while West Ham will watch closely to see how the academy graduate handles the demands of senior football.
